Leash Training
Name: Jenn Collins Date: 2006-08-25 07:41:00
I have a 4-month old toy poodle who will not walk on a leash. He will follow me around the house and even outside with no problem, even comes when I snap and seems to understand and follow my simple directions easily. But as soon as that leash is attached to his collar he plants his rear on the floor and will not move. Is this common for puppies? How do I leash train my dog?

I would start by just putting the leash on your pup and letting him walk around the house. Don't touch the leash except to put it on and then try to call him to you and reward him when he comes. Eventually try to pick up the leash and call him to you and then give him a treat. Don't pull on the leash -encourage your pup to come to your without any resistance. Make sure the leash is very light-sometimes with small dogs if the leash is too heavy they try to resist. Give us a call at 288-8186 if you need more assistance or would like to enroll in our puppy class in September.
