Moving to a New Home
Name: Angel Date: 2006-09-06 08:52:11
I have a 2 year old Puggle, besides from having a lot of energy she is a very good dog. I have recently gotten married and we have moved into a new house. A couple months before moving and since we have moved, Pebbles has become very scared of people. She used to run over and greet anyone, one walks, at the door, etc. But now when I new person comes into our house or even people that she has been around (but it has been a long time), she will not come near them. She will run to a hiding spot and basically keep them in her line of view but stay far away from them. At times we will pick her up to try to get her closer and she will shake so bad I feel horrible for her. We are not sure what to do, our other dog is overly friendly to people, she is a lab/retriever mix, she is 6 years old. Any ideas on how to make Pebbles not so fearful of people? We have been in the new house for about 3 months and at first with all the workmen coming in making lots of noise it was understandable, but all that is over now and we just want her to be somewhat friendly to new people. Thank you!

Angel It sounds as if your puggle may have been a little traumatized by the move and all of the noises and distractions. How does she react to your husband? I would recommend having a friend come over quietly and calmly sit on the floor watching TV or listening to the radio away from your puggle with some treats in her hand. Let your puggle come to her (it may take one or two visits but eventually your puggle will investigate). Your friend may be able to throw a few treats to help lure your puggle as well but not to make any big hand movements if the puggle gets closer. When she does get close see if your friend can pet her under the chin for a short time and give her some treats. I would recommend doing this with a variety of people inside and then try doing it in your yard. It will take time and is a slow process but your pet will soon become a people loving puggle again. Just remember to go slow at her own pace and not to make any big distracting movements if your puggle gets close.
