Potty Training

Bonnie, I've had Atticus, mix of Rottweiler and Beagle, for approximately a month. In the previous home they had started potty training and we picked up on it. The first day or so he had accidents but he did really good afterwards. He's had a few weeks where he's been pretty good but has been doing #1 every night and during the day in his crate. We've used the stain and odor remover, we've set his cage so small he can barely fit... so we made it a bit bigger. We've put music for him so he has something to hear... left a light on, etc. And he is still having accidents. It is really frustrating and I am just wondering if you had any ideas that may help on this issue. Thank you, Edmie Castillo

Edmie I need a little bit more information. You say that you have had Atticus for a month, so how old is Atticus right now? And since he is pottying during the day and at night how often is he let out during the day? Most dogs can hold their bladder for how many months old they are. So for example, if Atticus is 4 months old he can hold his bladder for about 4 hours. This is not set in stone but may help give you some guidelines. I would also recommend using Nature's miracles to clean up the messes and clean out the entire crate so there is no odor left. The best thing is to keep him on a schedule if possible. Potty in AM and after breakfast, potty during lunch and again before and after dinner time and before bedtime. If you see him pottying in the house, immediately correct him verbally and take him outside and then praise him outside when he finishes. If you follow a consistent routine and take him out every couple of hours and you are still having trouble, I would take him to the vet to rule out and medical concerns. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
